This project aims to ensure that all Flagstaff residents have reliable access to clean, healthy indoor air, regardless of outdoor air quality conditions. By expanding access to effective clean-air resources and offering practical guidance for maintaining safe indoor environments, the project supports households in achieving indoor air quality that promotes long-term health, comfort, and community resilience.
Through community engagement, we aim to identify barriers to clean air in Flagstaff, Arizona, and use community-based solutions to surmount these barriers. A healthier Flagstaff is possible, and this project will be a stepping stone to solidifying our community as a clean air city.
Air quality is a growing concern around the world, with increased production of particulate matter leading to a worsened state of air quality. In Flagstaff, Arizona, one of the largest producers of particulate matter is prescribed burns and wildfire. While both are necessary for a healthy and resilient forest, the health impacts are significant.
Flagstaff is a fire-adapted community, meaning that it takes an active role in preparation and mitigation of wildfire, all while understanding the instrumental role fire plays in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
While poor quality is a threat that continues to get worse every year, the technology to monitor the air quality is also constantly improving and expanding. With real-time air quality monitoring, access to knowledge that was previously difficult to obtain is at our fingertips. Using resources like PurpleAir and AirNow, people can see the air quality index for specific areas, such as neighborhoods and cities.
